Rolex Submariner ‘Gilt Exclamation Dial’ – Reference 5512
Rolex Submariner ‘Gilt Exclamation Dial’ – Reference 5512
Heritage Narrative
The Rolex Submariner reference 5512 is one of the most important foundations of the modern Submariner lineage. Introduced in the late 1950s, the 5512 marked a turning point for Rolex dive watches, establishing the 40 mm case, crown guards, and professional tool-watch proportions that would define the model for decades.
This example features the highly sought-after gilt “chapter ring” dial with the rare exclamation point marker above 6 o’clock. The exclamation dial was produced for a brief period in the early 1960s and is believed to indicate reduced radium lume content, making it a transitional and historically significant variant. Combined with the glossy gilt printing and chapter ring minute track, it represents one of the purest early Submariner dial executions.
With its pointed crown guards (PCG), acrylic crystal, and minimalist two-line dial layout, the 5512 embodies the Submariner in its most authentic form. Revered by collectors, gilt exclamation 5512s are valued not only for their rarity, but for their role in shaping the DNA of every Submariner that followed.
