Introduced in 1953, the Rolex Submariner set the benchmark for modern dive watches and quickly became one of the most influential tool watches ever created. Known for its robustness, precision, and timeless design, the Submariner has remained a cornerstone of the Rolex collection for over seven decades.
In 2003, Rolex introduced the reference 16610LV to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Submariner. Nicknamed the “Kermit” by collectors, this reference marked a pivotal moment in Rolex history. While the core design remained familiar, the introduction of a green aluminum bezel was a bold and unexpected move for the brand at the time, instantly setting the watch apart from its black-bezel counterparts.
Beyond the distinctive bezel, the 16610LV also introduced the Maxi Dial to the Submariner Date line, featuring larger hour markers and broader hands for improved legibility. The watch retained the classic 40 mm case but transitioned to a no-lug-hole design, signaling the gradual shift toward a more modern Submariner aesthetic.
Originally sold in October 2007, this example represents one of the most desirable later “Kermit” configurations, combining collector-favorite dial and bezel variants with a strong full-set provenance.
