Rolex GMT-Master II ‘Fat Lady’ – Reference 16760 (1986)
Rolex GMT-Master II ‘Fat Lady’ – Reference 16760 (1986)
Heritage Narrative
The Rolex GMT-Master II reference 16760, universally known as the “Fat Lady,” holds a unique and highly important place in Rolex history. Introduced in 1983, it was the very first GMT-Master II, marking a fundamental technical evolution of the GMT line.
Unlike the earlier GMT-Master models, the 16760 introduced an independently adjustable hour hand, allowing the wearer to track three time zones simultaneously when used with the rotating bezel. To accommodate the new Calibre 3085 movement, Rolex increased the case thickness, giving rise to the unmistakable and affectionate “Fat Lady” nickname among collectors.
Produced for a relatively short period until 1988, the 16760 was offered exclusively in stainless steel and only with a black dial and red/blue “Pepsi” bezel, making it a transitional reference with genuine historical importance. Today, it is widely regarded as one of the most collectible neo-vintage GMT models.
This 1986 example features the classic black dial with luminous hour markers, sapphire crystal, and the robust Oyster case that bridged vintage charm with modern Rolex engineering. Offered in excellent condition and accompanied by its original box and booklets, it represents a highly desirable and increasingly scarce configuration of the first true GMT-Master II.
